The first MMCs were delivered to Tema, Ghana and are currently owned by Dr. Edith Clarke, a leading world health expert. Dr. Clarke works with the Ghana Health Services and has previously worked with The Navigators, a Christian non-profit organization. She also directs a certified midwife training center based in Accra, Ghana.
Ghana, West Africa, was chosen as the initial developing country because it has a large population (30 million), experiences endemic curable diseases, and has a significant corps of trained healthcare workers who are eager to work with PMMI toward the same shared objectives. PMMI is working in several other developing countries that also share these characteristics.
