The first MMCs were delivered to Tema, Ghana and are currently supervised by Dr. Edith Clarke, a leading world health expert. Dr. Clarke works with The Ghana Health Agency and is on the Board of The Ghana Navigators. She also directs a certified mid-wife training center based in Accra.

Ghana, West Africa, was chosen as the initial developing country because it has a large population (30 million), experiences endemic curable diseases and has a significant corps of trained health care workers who are eager to work with PMMI towards the same shared objectives. PMMI is working in several other developing countries that also share these characteristics.
